Abdomegaphobema mesomelas (Costa Rican Red Leg Tarantula)

Abdomegaphobema mesomelas, commonly known as the Costa Rican Red Leg Tarantula, is a New World tarantula native to Costa Rica and parts of Central America. This species is well known in the hobby for its striking appearance, featuring darker body coloration contrasted with reddish tones on the legs that give the species its common name.

One of the most interesting traits of this species is its unique defensive behavior. When threatened, the Costa Rican Red Leg may spin around and kick with its back legs, a defensive display that members of this group are well known for. Like other New World tarantulas, it also possesses urticating hairs that can be kicked as a defense.

In the wild, Abdomegaphobema mesomelas is a terrestrial species that spends much of its time in burrows or natural retreats. In captivity, providing deep substrate and a secure hide helps encourage natural behavior and keeps the spider comfortable in its enclosure.

Hobbyists often appreciate the Costa Rican Red Leg Tarantula for its interesting behavior, bold defensive displays, and distinctive coloration, making it a memorable species to observe.
