This species is shipped in the habitat it can stay in for several molts. 😊 We recommend not using substrate for a couple of molts and not misting this species. Offering a drop of water on the webbing every few days is ok.
Eresus sp. “Bouarfa” (Moroccan Velvet Spider)
Species Description
Eresus sp. “Bouarfa”, commonly known as the Moroccan Velvet Spider, is a striking species of velvet spider native to the arid regions of Morocco, particularly around the Bouarfa area. Members of the Eresus genus are well known for their bold coloration and fascinating web-building behavior.
Female Moroccan Velvet Spiders have a velvety black body covered in dense hairs, giving them a soft, plush appearance that inspires the common name “velvet spider.” Mature males of many Eresus species develop vivid red markings with black spots, creating one of the most visually distinctive patterns among spiders.
Velvet spiders construct silk-lined burrows and webbed retreats where they wait for passing prey. They tend to remain within their web structures, making them fascinating to observe as they respond to vibrations and capture insects.
In captivity, Eresus sp. “Bouarfa” does well in a well-ventilated enclosure with moderately dry substrate and a small retreat area where it can build its web tunnel. Hobbyists enjoy this species for its unique appearance, interesting web behavior, and relatively small size, making it an intriguing addition to many invertebrate collections.
