Chilobrachys natanicharum is a stunning tarantula species that originates from Thailand. This species is known for its striking appearance and webbing behavior, making it a popular choice among tarantula enthusiasts. The Chilobrachys natanicharum displays a deep, rich brown or bronze coloration, with subtle metallic hues that can shimmer under the right lighting. As it matures, the carapace often exhibits a beautiful contrast between the darker tones of its body and the lighter, almost golden, carapace.
This tarantula is a medium to large species, with adults reaching a leg span of approximately 5 to 6 inches (12-15 cm). The Chilobrachys natanicharum is an Old World tarantula, meaning it lacks urticating hairs and relies more on its speed and potential defensive behavior when threatened.
Behavior:
This species is known for being a prolific webber, often creating intricate tunnel systems and extensive webbing throughout its enclosure. Chilobrachys natanicharum can be defensive and is typically quick-moving, so it’s recommended for more experienced keepers. While not aggressive, this tarantula should be respected for its speed and potential for a quick defensive strike if startled.
Care Information:
Enclosure:
Size: A medium-sized terrestrial enclosure is ideal, with a minimum of 12" x 12" x 12" (30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm) for an adult. Provide ample depth for substrate to allow for burrowing.
Substrate: Use a deep layer of substrate, such as coconut fiber, peat moss, or a mix, at least 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) deep to accommodate its burrowing behavior.
Webbing Space: Leave enough space for the tarantula to create its extensive webbing. Vertical decorations like cork bark or branches can help support this.
Temperature and Humidity:
Temperature: Room temperatures between 70 and 80 work well.
Humidity: The substrate should be moist. One side of the habitat can be drier than the other.
Feeding:
Offer appropriately sized prey, such as crickets, roaches, or other insects, once or twice a week. This species is an active hunter and will readily accept live prey.
Remove any uneaten prey after 24 hours to prevent stress or harm to the tarantula.
Water:
Provide a shallow water dish to ensure the tarantula has access to fresh water.
Molting:
Like all tarantulas, this species will molt periodically. During this time, it may refuse food and become more reclusive. Ensure that the humidity is slightly increased during molting to aid in a successful shed.
With the right care and respect for its natural behaviors, Chilobrachys natanicharum can be a fascinating and rewarding species to keep, offering a glimpse into the complex world of tarantula behavior and web architecture.
