Species Description
Abdomegaphobema peterklaasi, commonly known as the Costa Rican Ember Tarantula, is a striking terrestrial species native to Costa Rica. Recently reclassified from the genus Megaphobema into the newer genus Abdomegaphobema, this tarantula is admired for its rich coloration and distinctive defensive behavior.
The Costa Rican Ember Tarantula displays deep reddish-brown and ember-colored tones, particularly on the legs and carapace, giving it a warm, glowing appearance. As the spider matures, these colors become more pronounced, making this species especially attractive to collectors.
Like other members of this lineage, Abdomegaphobema peterklaasi is a terrestrial tarantula that appreciates a deep substrate for burrowing. Adults typically reach a leg span of about 5β6 inches. When threatened, this species may exhibit the characteristic βhair kickingβ or defensive spinning behavior seen in related species.
In captivity, the Costa Rican Ember Tarantula does well in a terrestrial enclosure with moderate humidity and adequate substrate. Hobbyists appreciate this species for its unique behavior, impressive appearance, and interesting taxonomic history, making it a fascinating addition to many tarantula collections.
