Thrixopelma sp. “Andes Fire” (Andes Fire Tarantula)
Species Description
Thrixopelma sp. “Andes Fire”, commonly known as the Andes Fire Tarantula, is a striking New World tarantula believed to originate from the Andean regions of South America. This species has gained popularity in the hobby due to its vibrant coloration and attractive contrast between darker body tones and fiery orange or reddish highlights.
Like other members of the Thrixopelma genus, the Andes Fire Tarantula is a terrestrial species that appreciates deep substrate for burrowing and constructing a secure retreat.
As a New World tarantula, Thrixopelma sp. “Andes Fire” possesses urticating hairs, which it may kick as a defensive behavior when disturbed. New World species generally rely on these defensive hairs rather than strong venom, although they should still be handled with care and respect.
In captivity, the Andes Fire Tarantula does well in a terrestrial enclosure with adequate substrate, moderate humidity, and good ventilation. Hobbyists appreciate this species for its beautiful coloration, manageable size, and interesting natural behaviors, making it an appealing addition to many tarantula collections.
